There are moments in parenting that most people might overlook.
A child tying their shoes.
Your child putting away their toys.
A child making a simple lunch.
For many families, those moments happen every day.
For special-needs parents, the experience can feel monumental.
This weekend, my son made his own peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Now, to some people, that may not sound like a big deal.

 One of the biggest misconceptions about independence is that it comes from teaching a bunch of life skills all at once. As parents of children with autism and other special needs, we often worry about the future.

Now, I know what some people might be thinking.
“It’s just a sandwich.”
But if you’re the parent of a child with Autism, ADHD, or other special needs, you probably understand exactly why that moment meant so much to me.

As parents, we all want our children to feel confident in themselves. We want them to believe they can learn new things, overcome challenges, and navigate the world with a sense of pride. For parents of children with Autism or ADHD, building confidence can sometimes feel like an uphill battle.

We hold hands.
And somewhere along the way, helping becomes such a normal part of life that we almost forget to imagine what it might feel like when our child suddenly doesn’t need us in quite the same way.

We know independence matters and that each child with autism or special needs has unique readiness levels. Tailoring support to their individual pace helps prevent unintentional pressure and promotes genuine confidence.

Friendly reminder for parents: progress does not always happen in giant leaps. Sometimes it happens in tiny moments that are easy to miss until one day you realize just how far your child has come.

In our house, life can get busy quickly. Between school, appointments, family responsibilities, and trying to keep everything running smoothly, there have been days when it felt like I was constantly repeating myself:

“Time to get dressed.”
“Did you brush your teeth?”
“Remember your backpack.”
“What’s next?”

Parenting a child with autism or special needs often turns you into a detective, problem solver, organizer, cheerleader, and planner — sometimes all before breakfast. Many of us spend years trying different ideas, wondering what will actually help our children feel calmer, more independent, and more successful in everyday life.
